How the sight of a loved one can ease our suffering

It's no secret that being around someone we love can make us happy and relaxed, and their presence can reassure us and make us feel safe when we’re faced with a threat. But what we don’t completely understand is the neural mechanisms behind these feelings. Now, new research in PNAS demonstrates that the mere sight of a loved one can activate some brain regions and inhibit others, making painful events feel just a little bit less excruciating.

A group of UCLA scientists rounded up 21 females that were in committed relationships and put them one by one into an fMRI machine. The subjects were asked to look at a series of images (a stranger, their partner, and a chair) as they were subjected to a hot probe touching their forearm. As the women felt pain from the probe, the machine took scans of their brain to determine how the activity patterns changed depending on what image they were looking at. The subjects were also asked to rate the pain they felt while they saw each photo.

Pool Party: Google Has Their Own Secret Photo-Sharing App Too ? Built By Slide

Back in March, we first exposed Disco, a group messaging app that the Slide team within Google had built. And that's not all they've been working on. Say hello to Pool Party, another secret project by the same team within Google. We don't know much about Pool Party other than it's a photo-sharing app that the Slide team has built. It is also believed to be Android-only for now (as you can see in the screenshots below). The emphasis is said to be on creating group albums ("pools") that show new photos in real time. The app is currently in invite-only beta testing. And Google was able to secure the poolpartyapp.com domain for it ? not quite as sexy as disco.com, but it will do.

webOS licensing talks are underway, Samsung possibly interested

When HP acquired Palm last year, it seemed obvious that the company's webOS platform would be used exclusively on HP hardware. But at the D9 conference last month, HP indicated that the company would consider licensing the software to other hardware manufacturers that are interested in building devices that complement HP's product lineup.

The possibility of third-party webOS devices is looking even more likely this week. HP has confirmed rumors that it is in talks with a number of companies regarding potential webOS licensing deals. In a statement to This is My Next, HP's Jon Rubenstein said that the company is looking for partners who are willing to make a serious commitment to the platform and potentially contribute to development efforts. They aren't going to make a deal with just anybody, and they aren't going to do it in a hurry.

Citing three unnamed individuals who are said to be close to be close to the licensing discussions, Bloomberg reports that Samsung is interested in licensing webOS from HP to use as an alternative to Android on its tablet products. The Bloomberg article speculates that Samsung could be looking for more flexibility for customization. There is no official confirmation of Samsung's involvement in webOS licensing talks at this time.

HP has lofty ambitions for webOS and aims to bring the platform to a wide range of different hardware products, including desktop computers and printers. Despite the platform's numerous strengths, it faces an uphill battle competing against Android's existing entrenchment. Winning over a major Android hardware vendor to webOS might help HP pursue its goals, but it would also risk eroding the value of having an exclusive platform.

Analyst: the cheap iPhone will be a free 3GS

Analysts really want Apple to enter the low-price smartphone market. So much so, they can't stop talking about this rumored cheap model. The latest analyst to chime in on this topic is Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital. He predicts Apple will release a cheap iPhone model when the iPhone 5 debuts. It won't be a new model, though. Instead, he expects the iPhone 3GS to be offered for free. Apple will also drop the price on the iPhone 4 to US$99, says Abramsky.

Earlier this week, Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore kicked off this rumor again when he proposed the idea of a mid-range iPhone 4S that will launch along with the iPhone 5. Toni Sacconaghi of Sanford Bernstein also called for Apple to release a lower priced iPhone, but did not mention an iPhone 4S. Keith Bachman of BMO threw a monkey wrench into everyone's predictions by dismissing the idea of a cheap iPhone and predicting a single, full-featured model - the iPhone 4S.

MyPad, The ?Facebook For iPad? App, Is Now A Game Distribution Platform Too

We've written extensively about the vacuum created on the iPad by the lack of an official native Facebook application. That may change soon ?there are reports that an official app is finally on the way ?but there are already a handful of companies that have been able to take advantage of the opportunity, to the tune of millions of users. One of these apps is MyPad (formerly known as Facepad), which has now been downloaded nearly 10 million times since it launched five months ago. This week, the company is launching an updated version of its application, which includes improvements to some of the core Facebook features you'd expect ?chat, photos, News Feed, and so on. But this update also introduces a new component: games. You can download the free version of the app here.

Civilizing the 'Net: ISPs told to play copyright cop

A major Internet conference ended today in Paris with the publication of an official "Communiqu on Principles for Internet Policy-Making" (PDF). A key piece of these principles involves deputizing Internet providers to become Internet cops—cops that would act on the basis of "voluntary agreements" with content owners and other groups, not on national laws.

Institute Double Take

STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER
An empty hallway inside MIT Medical provides a study in texture and shape. The walls, ceiling, and floor are all different materials. One wall is brick, and the other consists of windows, though the texture from this perspective is dominated by the windows? wooden borders. The floor is smooth tile, while the ceiling appears to be concrete. The image is thus split into four nearly triangle-shaped regions. The borders between these regions seem to converge to a single vanishing point, and would do so were the hallway infinite instead of abruptly truncated by a glass double door.

WWDC Interview: Clickable Bliss

Victor Agreda, Jr. (Editor-in-Chief, The Unofficial Apple Weblog) interviews Michael Zornek of Clickable Bliss at WWDC 2011. Michael was kind enough to tell us about his thoughts on the announcements on WWDC, and how it will affect their plans moving forward.

Clickable Bliss makes ProfitTrain (an invoicing app for Mac) and Dex (a Pokemon browser for iPhone) and recently released a very clever and slick game called Twiz Show, a sort of game show based on your Twitter friends for iOS devices. If you're looking for a fun game that ties into your Twitter buddies, give Twiz Show a look.

TUAW and MacTech Magazine teamed up to speak to developers at WWDC 2011 about the keynote announcements and how Apple's new technologies will help them and their customers. Prince: Digital Music Has A Different Impact On Your Brain

Prince is apparently continuing his war with the modern world. The rockstar who once seemed to be on the cusp of leading the music world into the digital era, seems to have gone so far to the other extreme that he's become a joke. He went on the legal warpath against some internet sites, completely ignored his own website, which he charged people to access, and declared that the internet was over and he'd no longer allow his music online. Oh, and then there was his claim that if someone covers your song, the original no longer exists, despite the fact he's done a bunch of covers.

He's now done another interview, and despite his "people" telling the interviewer that he wasn't allowed to ask about Prince's views on the internet, Prince dove in anyway and explained why digital music impacts your brain in a different way:
His management's pre-interview list of guidelines insisted, "Please do not discuss his views on the internet," but perhaps Prince hasn't read them. "I personally can't stand digital music," he says. "You're getting sound in bits. It affects a different place in your brain. When you play it back, you can't feel anything. We're analogue people, not digital." He's warming to his theme. "Ringtones!" he exclaims. "Have you ever been in a room where there's 17 ringtones going off at once?"

Does he have a ringtone?

"No," he says, looking as offended as if I'd asked him if he drove a clown car. "I don't have a phone."
He also appears to have picked up some misguided notions from some in the recording industry that it's really all the tech world's fault that people aren't buying music any more. Also, he claims that the White House has asked him to come talk about "piracy." Though it's not uncommon for the White House to hear from foreign dignitaries, this may mark the first time they have invited a representative from another planet.
"We made money [online] before piracy was real crazy. Nobody's making money now except phone companies, Apple and Google. I'm supposed to go to the White House to talk about copyright protection. It's like the gold rush out there. Or a carjacking. There's no boundaries. I've been in meetings and they'll tell you, Prince, you don't understand, it's dog-eat-dog out there. So I'll just hold off on recording."
That's barely comprehensible in general (what does the second to last sentence have to do with anything?), and even if you accept the basic statements about "piracy," the rest doesn't make much sense. Prince has already figured out how to deal with that, doing his deals with newspapers to pre-sell his CDs, and recognizing that the real money is in live shows (for which the music acts as an excellent promotional tool). So why is he complaining?
